Glass and Silicone
green sprouts makes Feeding, Toys, and Wellness products with safety and health in mind. We use a range of quality materials to provide functionality and convenience for baby's daily care and whole development. When possible we prefer to use glass or silicone, instead of petroleum-based plastics in cups, dishes, utensils, and teethers.
Silicone was developed as a petroleum-free alternative to natural rubber and is silica (sand) based. It is an inert and stable material, which means it is unlikely to react with or leach into food, or to give off odors of vapors.
Glass, like silicone, has as it's main component silica (sand). It is chemically stable and does not absorb tastes or odors. Petroleum-free glass is used in green sprouts Glass Sip & Straw inner cup.

Customers are mixed about the ease of cleaning. Some mention that it does not leak and is reasonably easy to clean. Customers are mixed about the leakage of the cup. Some mention that it hasn't leaked, while others say that it leaks all over the place. Customers are mixed about the ease of assembly of the drinking cup. Some mention it's easy to do, just fiddly. It's durable, and easy for my child to use. Short Version: This cup is fantastic- don't hesitate to buy it.
Long Version: I love this cup. I was looking for a glass and silicone option. This cup fits the bill and the cherry on top that it (1) has (removable) handles and (2) comes with both a sippy spout and straw option. I want to address a few of the complaints I have read about this cup:
-"There are too many components to clean." I have never taken issue with this. Basically, there is a base, an inner glass which sits atop the base, an outer plastic cup which encases the glass and screws into the base, the handles, and the ring and spout/straw portion (the straw version does have an additional part the spout does not). Yeah, it might be more than a typical cup, but it is dishwasher safe (though I do always wash the silicone portions by hand) and even if you are handwashing, it really takes all of 30 seconds. Not an issue to me. To each their own.
-"The glass breaks too easily." My child has dropped this from his highchair many times and tossed it across the floor whenever he was tired of drinking. We have no carpet in our home (tile and hardwood) and it has never broken or cracked. Earlier this week, I was holding him on my shoulders (I am 5'7") and he chucked it on the concrete slab we were standing on. I was sure it was done for, but NOPE, held up like a champ. 2+ months and going strong.
-"Handles and spout don't align for proper drinking positioning." I had to laugh at this poor OCD soul. I TOTALLY know where they are coming from (a tad OCD myself- hollaaaaa!!!), but do NOT let this stop you from buying this cup. The handles twist and you are always EASILY able to position the spout and the handles appropriately for little one to drink easily. The trick sometimes is getting the little sprout fellow on the cup to line up perfectly within the center of the handles and directly below the spout. Choose your battles.
-"It is hard to get liquid from the straw." Not sure what to say about this one. I can only speak for my own experience, but at 14 months (one year when I first purchased this cup), my son has never had any issue getting liquid through the straw and neither have I...
I have been very pleased with this cup. I originally purchased two and am back to get a couple more. Highly recommend.
UPDATE: Still loving the cup six months later and had the pleasure of dealing with their customer service (not due to an issue with the cup, but rather a component I misplaced). Great product and A+ customer service to boot. Very rare and very awesome.
Firstly, the lead issue. Thankfully, enough people must have complained about the numbers painted on the sides that the company has eliminated them entirely. The glass part of the cup I received has no markings whatsoever, just plain glass. Lead is usually found in the paint used on glass, so I'm glad I don't have to return it for that.
Pros:
- It is very easy for my eight month old to drink from this cup using the straw
- The interior glass part is small, it holds just the right amount for a baby/small child
- It's quite drop proof, she hasn't smashed it yet (though I don't allow it to be tossed from her high chair/anywhere high up)
- The handles are easy for her to grab and hold
- The straw and straw top are very easy to clean, as is the rest of it
Cons:
- The handles, while easy for baby to grab and hold, twist around on the cup no matter how tightly I screw it together. This can make it hard for her to use when the handle slips around as she's trying to get her mouth on the straw.
- There are a lot of small parts to wash and put together. It's easy to do, just fiddly.
- It is quite bulky for a smaller person. My eight month old can grab it and pick it up to drink with the straw, but it's a little awkardly large still for her.
Overall, it is a good sippy/straw cup. I like that it's glass and silicone only in contact with her water. However I don't love how bulky it is or the twisty handles.
I also like the fact that they offer a straw at all. We don't use sippy lids usually and it's hard to find non-plastic straw options for babies.
